Making community participation hours count

With some community participation budgets changing, here are practical ways to plan outings that matter most.

Getting out into the community is about more than filling hours. It builds confidence, friendships and skills. With some Community Participation budgets being reduced as plans are renewed, planning how those hours are used matters more than ever.

Start with goals

Look at the goals in the plan. Which outings help most with those goals? Prioritise those, and look for free or low-cost options for the rest.

Ideas around Greater Brisbane

Public libraries run free programs, from book clubs to technology help.

Local parks and riverside paths offer accessible walks.

Community and neighbourhood centres often host low-cost groups and classes.

Local markets are a good way to practise budgeting and social skills.

Check accessibility before you go, as access varies between venues.

Build skills into outings

An outing can also build independence: planning the route, using public transport, ordering at a cafe or paying at the shops.
