NDIS budget changes from 1 October 2026: what participants and families need to know
Some plan budgets are being reduced over the next 12 months. Here is what is changing, what is protected, and what you can do.
From 1 October 2026, the NDIA has started reducing some participant budgets. The changes follow new NDIS laws that received Royal Assent on 20 August 2026. They are being introduced gradually over the next 12 months, so most people will not see a change until their plan is created, reassessed or renewed.
Which budgets are changing
Social, Economic and Community Participation budgets. People with Disability Australia reports this is a 50% reduction.
Improved Daily Living Skills budgets. People with Disability Australia reports this is a 10% reduction.
The NDIA says the impact will be different for each person, depending on their goals, circumstances and support needs.
What is not changing
The NDIA has confirmed that many supports are protected, including:
Help with daily living, such as eating, dressing and toileting
Nursing care and help with medication
Home and vehicle modifications, mobility equipment and specialist disability accommodation
Within the two affected budgets, some supports are also excluded, including employment, disability-related health, high intensity and complex behaviour supports.
When it applies to you
Reductions apply to plans created or reassessed from 1 October 2026, and to plans renewed from 1 February 2027. The NDIA notes that the reduction is not a reviewable decision.
What you can do
If your circumstances change significantly, you can ask for a plan reassessment or plan variation.
If you receive 24-hour funded supports and your combined Daily Life, Home and Living and Community Participation budgets are $215,030 or more, a new high support needs pathway lets you request a plan variation.
Talk with your support coordinator or plan manager early, so your supports can be planned around the new budget before it starts.
